Representation of Social Class

Representation of Social Class
There are predominantly 4 Social Class groups that families and individuals can be classified under, These groups are distinguished mainly by the peoples Jobs, Income and Ownership of Land.

The four Social Groups are:

Upper Class
The People in this group will mostly have either inherited wealth or be in well paying highly respected jobs. They will mostly own land as well.

Middle Class
These people will mainly be in non-manual professions (White Collar Workers). They will be well paid but will most likely not own much land.

Working Class
These people will be mostly in Skilled or Unskilled manual work. They will be paid, but will not have as much disposable income as the middle class.

Under Class
These people are mostly shows as excluded groups due to Poverty or Lack of Employment. These are often portrayed as deviant in the media - being Spongers/addicts.

These are the four social classes, but we can also look at the representation of these social classes within the media.

Upper Class
These people in the Upper Class are shown to be living the life of luxury, with stately homes and servants to wait on them hand and foot. A good example of this in TV Drama would be the OC, this is because they are shown to be living in luxury with everything they could ever want. The characters are shown to have high paying and respected jobs such as lawyers and property developers. Another example would be Downton Abbey, this once again is because they are shown to have inherited a lot of money and also land with servants and large mansions.

Middle Class
These people in the Middle Class are shown to be living a comfortable life, and are the most commonly shown social class in the media. This is because this is often thought to be the norm within life. A good example of this would be Emmerdale, this is because most of the characters are shown to be leading a comfortable life with good paying jobs such as owning businesses, they also own a small bit of land.
